How to Find the MAC Address on PS5 and Choose the Right One

On PS5, go to Settings → System → System Software → Console Information to find the console's MAC address information. If a school, workplace or managed network asks you to register the console, make sure you supply the address for the connection you will actually use: Wi-Fi or wired LAN.

01Find the information on the console

  1. Return to the PS5 home screen.
  2. Open Settings using the gear icon.
  3. Select System.
  4. Open System Software.
  5. Select Console Information.
  6. Read the MAC address entry and any interface label shown beside it.

Sony's console information instructions identify this screen as a place to view the console name, IP address and MAC address alongside system-software information.

You do not need to reset the console or install a special application to read this information. If the purpose is network registration, keep the network's instructions beside you so you can match the requested field correctly.

I would copy the address carefully, then read it back once. A single incorrect character can cause a registration request to fail even when the rest of the setup is correct.

02A MAC address is not an IP address

A MAC address identifies a network interface at the local-network level. An IP address serves a different role in network communication and may change as the network assigns addresses. Neither should be confused with the console's serial number.

Choose the field the administrator requested
FieldTypical purpose
MAC addressRegister or identify a network interface
IP addressIdentify the current network address
Console nameA human-readable device label
Serial numberIdentify the physical product for service

A MAC address is commonly displayed as six pairs of hexadecimal characters, using digits and letters A through F. Separators may be colons or hyphens. The registration form may specify which formatting it accepts.

Do not convert the address into an ordinary number, remove leading zeroes or substitute a device name. Copy the requested identifier in the required format.

03Wi-Fi and wired LAN need the matching address

A console can have different network interfaces. If an administrator authorises the wireless interface and you later plug in Ethernet, the wired connection may need its own registration.

Read the interface labels rather than assuming the first visible address is correct. If you are unsure which one is being requested, tell the administrator whether you intend to connect wirelessly or by cable. That is a useful clarification, not a reason to alter the console's network configuration.

Using Wi-Fi

Provide the wireless interface address requested by the network's registration process.

Using Ethernet

Provide the wired LAN address. Do not reuse a wireless entry simply because it belongs to the same console.

I would keep a private note with a clear label for each interface if you regularly switch between them. An unlabelled screenshot is easy to misread months later.

04Registering on a managed network

Follow the organisation's approved process. Some networks provide a device-registration portal, while others require an administrator to add the device. The MAC address is only the identifier; it does not guarantee that the network permits gaming consoles or all gaming services.

After registration, allow the stated processing time, then reconnect using the interface you registered. If access still fails, confirm the recorded address with the administrator before repeatedly changing settings.

A successful local connection and successful access to PlayStation services are separate checkpoints. A network can assign an IP address while still restricting particular traffic. Describe exactly which stage fails when asking for help.

Do not copy another device's address or attempt to bypass the organisation's controls. Besides creating identification conflicts, that would not establish an approved connection for your console.

05If the registration does not work

  1. Confirm that the recorded address matches the console screen exactly.
  2. Check that Wi-Fi or LAN matches your actual connection.
  3. Check the form's separator and character requirements.
  4. Confirm that the registration was accepted rather than merely submitted.
  5. Reconnect and report the precise error if access still fails.

One common source of confusion is submitting the current IP address in the MAC field. Another is registering Wi-Fi and testing Ethernet. Both can look like an unexplained network outage until the identifiers are compared.

I would avoid resetting the router or rebuilding the console's configuration for this administrative problem. Those changes do not correct a mistyped registration entry and can erase useful context.

If the screen differs after a software update, look for Console Information within the system-software area and follow the current menu labels. The task is to read an identifier, not to enable a hidden performance option.

06Privacy and useful sharing

A MAC address is not your PlayStation password, but it is still a device identifier. Share it with the network administrator or official support process that needs it rather than posting a full console-information screenshot publicly.

The same screenshot may contain other details that are irrelevant to the request. Copying only the requested address is clearer and avoids exposing unnecessary account or network context.

Finding the address also does not improve download speed. It is useful for identification and registration. If the console is already authorised but performs poorly, investigate the connection separately.

07Common questions

Is this related to an Apple Mac?

No. MAC here means Media Access Control and refers to a network identifier.

Should I send the IP address instead?

Only if that is what the administrator requested. It is a different field serving a different purpose.

Why did access stop after switching to a cable?

The wired interface may have a different address and require its own authorisation. Confirm that with the network administrator.

Should I share a full Console Information screenshot?

Send only the identifier requested by the authorised network administrator or support process. A full screenshot may include unrelated device or network details.

08Read, label and verify

Open Console Information, match the MAC address to the interface you intend to use, and verify every character before submitting it. That is usually the entire task; no reset or performance tweak is necessary.
