Can PS4 and PS5 Play GTA Online Together? Check the Game Version First

01Why the edition matters more than the console

A PS5 can run supported PS4 software through backward compatibility. That means two people with different consoles can still be using the same generation of a game. Conversely, two people who both own a PS5 may launch different editions and end up unable to join one another.

“I am playing on PS5” therefore does not answer the compatibility question. Ask “Does the game I launched say PS4 or PS5?” It is a small difference in wording, but it prevents a long detour through router settings, account linking and invitation menus.

This is about GTA Online multiplayer. GTA V's single-player story does not become a shared campaign simply because two friends own compatible editions.

02What the PS5 player should check

1. Close the running game and inspect its version label in the game hub or library.
2. Look for the PS4 edition in the account's library or the available versions of the product.
3. Install and launch that edition if the account owns or otherwise has valid access to it.
4. Have the PS4 player launch their updated game, then try the invitation again.

I would verify ownership before deleting anything. A product bundle may include more than one version, but the presence of a PS5 install is not itself proof that every account has a PS4 entitlement. Read the exact product entry associated with your purchase.

If access depends on a physical PS4 disc, the PS5 needs a compatible installed disc drive. A digital-only console cannot authenticate a disc sitting on the desk. Do not buy an unrelated subscription or a second copy until you know which licence the existing purchase provides.

Keeping both editions can be convenient for a mixed-generation friend group, but it also makes the launch choice easy to get wrong. Before a planned session, tell the group the edition everyone should use. That simple habit is more reliable than assuming the most recently opened game is the right one.

03Migration is not cross-generation multiplayer

Migration concerns a profile and its progress. Matchmaking concerns which game edition and session infrastructure players use. Moving a character does not create a bridge between otherwise separate sessions.

Rockstar's profile migration guidance says the old-generation profile is retained after migration, but subsequent progress is not synchronised between console generations. That matters if you alternate between playing with PS4 friends and playing the native PS5 edition.

For a hypothetical example, imagine making progress during a PS5-edition session on Friday, then opening the PS4 edition on Saturday to join a friend. Do not expect Saturday's profile to be a continuously updated mirror of Friday's session. Decide which edition you want to treat as your main progression route.

I would not migrate merely to fix an invitation error. First establish that both friends are launching the same version. Only consider migration when you actually intend to move into the newer edition and have read the current eligibility and confirmation screens.

04If matching editions still cannot connect

Once the version mismatch is ruled out, investigate the symptom itself. Does the friend appear online? Does an invitation arrive but fail, or does the invitation option never appear? Can each person independently enter an online session? These observations distinguish an account or invitation issue from a wider connectivity problem.

Check that the game is updated and that neither person is blocked by an expired multiplayer entitlement, parental restriction or service outage. Then try a fresh invitation after both players have returned to a normal session state. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what actually helped.

A PlayStation party is useful for communication, but successfully speaking in a party is not proof that the games are compatible. Voice chat and the game's multiplayer session are different systems.

05Choosing between friends and newer features

The practical choice is often less dramatic than it sounds. Use the PS4 edition for the sessions that require it, and evaluate the native PS5 edition separately for its feature set. The important cost is the split in progression and installation space, rather than a magical “cross-play” switch you have missed.

For a group planning regular sessions, I would agree on a common edition before anyone buys an upgrade or removes an install. The best technical version is not necessarily the best social choice for that evening. Compatibility with the people you want to join is a valid requirement.

Avoid treating every online guide as current migration advice. The details of transfers have changed over the game's life. Version matching is the first check; the current profile-migration page is the place to verify what a transfer would do.

07Before the next invitation

Ask both players to identify their running game version. If one says PS4 and the other says PS5, fix that mismatch first. Once both are on the PS4 edition, you can troubleshoot a genuine connection or invitation problem without confusing it with a platform limitation.
