Can the PS5 Play PS3 Disks? Why the Drive Is Not the Problem

No. PS5 cannot play PS3 game discs, including on a PS5 fitted with a working Blu-ray drive. This is a game-compatibility limitation, not evidence that the drive is faulty. Cleaning the disc, changing regions or subscribing to PlayStation Plus does not turn it into a supported PS5 game.

01A readable disc format is not a runnable game

Two discs can use related physical technology while containing software intended for different platforms. Reading data is only one part of running a game; the console also needs support for that software and its expected environment.

Sony's backward compatibility limits explicitly exclude PS3 discs. The PS5's support for many PS4 games should therefore not be extended backwards by assumption to every earlier PlayStation generation.

I would stop disc-repair troubleshooting as soon as the label confirms that this is a PS3 game. Repeated cleaning, reinstall attempts or console resets cannot establish support that the platform does not offer.

This does not mean the PS3 disc is useless or damaged. It means the PS5 is not the supported machine for launching that original copy.

02The disc drive does not change the answer

An integrated PS5 drive and a compatible detachable PS5 drive provide access to supported disc types and software. Adding a drive to a compatible digital model does not add PS3 game compatibility.

What changes the result?
ChangeEnables PS3 discs?
Add a supported PS5 disc driveNo
Use another cable or televisionNo
Subscribe to PlayStation PlusNo
Clean an undamaged PS3 discNo

A PS5 Digital Edition without a drive has an additional physical-media limitation, but solving that limitation still leaves the PS3 software limitation in place. Think of them as two separate requirements rather than a single missing accessory.

I would not purchase an external USB optical drive or an advertised “disc converter” on the assumption that it changes this rule. Demand explicit official support for the intended function before spending money.

03How to tell an expected rejection from a drive fault

If your only failing disc is a PS3 game, that is not a meaningful test of PS5 drive health. Test the console with a known-supported disc instead.

If supported PS5 games or compatible movie discs also fail, investigate that separate symptom. Record whether the console recognises the disc, whether an error appears, and whether another supported disc works. Those observations are relevant to the drive.

Expected incompatibility

A PS3 game disc will not launch. No repair conclusion follows from that alone.

Possible hardware issue

Several known-supported discs fail under normal conditions. Troubleshoot the drive and media separately.

Do not factory-reset a working console to solve this compatibility question. Such a disruptive step would not change the supported game library and could create unnecessary work restoring the system.

04What owning the disc does and does not provide

The physical copy remains your copy of that PS3 release. It is not a universal entitlement to every later version carrying the same game name.

A remaster, remake or port may be sold separately. If an upgrade programme exists for a particular title, read its exact terms. Do not infer one from another publisher's promotion or from a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade offer.

Similarly, a PS3 title offered through a streaming catalogue is accessed through that service's entitlement. Inserting your old disc does not make an unavailable title appear in the catalogue or remove the service's regional conditions.

For someone replacing an old console, this is the important budget distinction. The cost of keeping access to favourite games may include compatible newer releases, a relevant subscription or retaining the original hardware. The disc itself does not choose that route for you.

05A practical plan for your physical collection

Start with the games you genuinely intend to revisit rather than pricing replacements for an entire shelf. For each one, decide whether the original release matters or whether a newer edition would satisfy you.

If the original is important, verify that your PS3 and required accessories still work before you reorganise or sell equipment. If a newer edition is acceptable, compare its included content and platform support carefully. A familiar cover image can conceal a different edition.

I would also check save expectations before buying. Continuing a particular old save is a more demanding requirement than simply playing the same story again. Treat save transfer as a title-specific feature that needs confirmation.

For collectors, preserving the disc and preserving convenient access are related but different goals. A shelf can remain intact even when the practical playback route changes. Decide which goal matters before buying replacement hardware.

06Common questions

Does PS5 Pro play PS3 discs?

No. A compatible drive does not add support for original PS3 game software.

Can a downloaded patch enable a particular disc?

Do not expect a normal game update to convert unsupported PS3 software into a PS5 release. Look for an officially supported newer version instead.

Does PS Plus Premium make my disc work?

No. Eligible cloud access is a separate service route and does not launch the game from that disc.

Should I return the PS5 because it rejects the disc?

Not on that evidence alone. Rejection of a PS3 game is expected; test supported media if you suspect a drive fault.

07Keep the diagnosis simple

Put the PS3 disc aside and choose a supported route for that exact game. The PS5's inability to launch it is not something a cable, cleaning kit or subscription upgrade repairs.
